The Barn

History

Do you paddle a kayak, canoe, raft or SUP? Then The Barn is the place for you. Northern Lights was founded on Mike Garcia’s passion for paddling. Raft expeditions to the Grand, canoeing in Canada, kayaking in South America and Africa. If it has to do with water, Mike’s probably been there. In fact, the name 'Northern Lights' came from a canoe trip Mike was on in which the northern lights danced across the sky every night for a week.

The Barn was opened in May of 2004 to house Northern Lights’ growing inventory. It is now Montana’s largest boating store. With the additional space we were able to display all our kayaks & canoes and it allowed us to have full raft packages complete with frames and accessories on display. The extra space also allowed us to expand our popular discount gear floor. We actively pursue closeout and rep sample merchandise from our vendors so you don’t have to pay full retail. Sale clothing, outlet gear and discount shoes, sandals and hiking boots are priced anywhere from 20% to 70% off.


The Building

The Barn is just that, an old barn from Manhattan, Montana that was moved to its current location just off Huffine Lane and converted into the space you see today. The Barn has a unique character. It’s distinctly Montana, with its river rock accents and old barn wood, while giving us an amazing space to house a huge amount of paddling product.

Customers are our number one priority at The Barn. Getting fully outfitted can be an expensive and time consuming process. We understand this and we have dedicated sales staff that can answer all your questions and give you honest opinions on the gear you’ll need to enjoy your river trip. Whether it’s oar locks, a touring kayak or a fully-outfitted raft capable of navigating the Grand Canyon our expert staff has the knowledge and the dedication to get you into the right gear the first time so you don’t make costly mistakes. Our staff is full of knowledgeable paddlers and oarsmen and we’re eager to hear about your next trip!

don't have to guess what components you want.


Rentals

We rent a variety of paddling gear. We can set you up for a day or a week on the river or just a quick paddle around Hyalite Lake. Rental rafts, raft frames and accessories, rental canoes, rental touring kayaks and rental whitewater kayaks. Our whitewater kayaks are all demo quality boats. Try before you buy and you can even apply part of your rental fee to the purchase price.
